Just The Bass

Bass Guitar Coaching for Adults.

The Coaching philosophy

It's Your Bass Journet, Not Mine...

It's your bass journey, not mine

Everyone's path to playing an instrument is different but to help you along the way I've created a structure of "sessions" that I think will benefit you, as an Adult Learner.

Remember: this is your Learning Journey. We take it at your pace, fit your sessions in around your life, your work, your family committments etc. There's no pressure to start and finish it in a set amount of time.

Here are the core ideas

Play first, explain later

The most important thing is getting the Bass in your hands, getting you comfortable wearing it, sitting with it and making it make noises. Everything else stems from that.

I've put together a of songs that we'll examine and learn together (with transcriptions of each), that are bass driven but not overly hard to learn.

They're popular so you will likely know them already; we'll get you physically comfortable with the Bass and then get you playing real songs.

It's Not About Learning By Rote

It's Coaching, not lecturing

I'm not here to talk AT you about how to play the bass.

There will be times when I go into the philosophy and mindset of being a Bass Player or a deep dive on a technique or piece of theory but that's all to help you contextualise what the Bass is doing and what your role is as the Bass Player.

I'll be encouraging you to explore and find the Bass in your own way using real world songs to get you playing and shine a light on the instrument and it's function.

The Foundations Only

You can't build a house without good, solid foundations. The same is true of both playing an instrument and playing music, with your role as the Bass Player literally being the foundation.

85-90% of all the music you'll play will need a core set of skills and that's what we're going to develop together.

Once you've got the essential tools hooked on your belt, you can go off on a side quest or two and learn the more "gymnastic" techniques if you want to!

song driven

At every stage, I'll try and make sure you can map what you're learning directly to songs so that you can hear and feel it rather than just "learn" it.

We'll be learning real songs as we go building up a repertoire of music and techniques.

I have a collection of transcriptions and popular songs that we'll work on together to get at the core concepts and make you a solid Bass Player.

music theory

Music Theory is the map, not the journey. It's nuts and bolts and yes, it's important, but you don't need to know all of it.

We'll explore some fundamental things that, as a Bass Player, you'd be well advised to know and understand but I won;'t overload you.

Practical milestones

When we meet we'll dscuss your goals for this journey and set some loose milestones to hit.

But don't worry, there's no "pass or fail" about it.

This is just us taking a breath to see how things are going, if you need to be challenged more or if you're struggling with something and need more time and Coaching on it.
